BICAL is the leader in the successful production and continued development of Miscanthus, the multipurpose crop for energy and industry.  

Miscanthus is a perennial grass, which satisfies the criteria for the ideal energy crop it is both profitable and environmentally friendly, and suitable for production across large areas of the EU. In the UK Miscanthus is recognised and supported by DEFRA, significant areas of Miscanthus are required to supply biomass into the renewable energy market. Established once, the crop yields for over 10 years, without replanting. BICAL have developed efficient and profitable systems for all aspects of crop production and onward processing.

BICAL has invested time and resources into developing a wide range of end uses for the crop, from animal bedding, inclusion in renewable composites through to one of the most profitable industrial crops on the market today. Longer term the crop has potential to be a feedstock for new energy conversion routes, such as bio-ethanol and hydrogen for fuel cells. We are actively looking for large numbers of growers, to meet demand for energy crop supply to the renewable energy market. For these markets we have long term indexed linked contracts available now; with BICAL farmer producer groups to organise the production and supply of fuel for these contracts.
